Reader Submitted: Club Cutlass and Club Zero Gravity

By Rita Mariner

Club Cutlass and Club Zero Gravity, go almost back to the founding of the Sunweavers Group, 15 years ago.  We had control of about 95% of the sim. So it dawned on us to create a couple of hangout spots, for the Sunweavers.

Since the theme of the sim was pirates, we had a pirate ship, in the harbor, and Club Cutlass was located inside, the fort, overlooking the harbor. Kind of leading to Club Cutlass always being an open air club.

We then installed Club Zero Gravity, into a nearby ravine, covering it over.  Shockwave Yareach then created anti-gravity belts you could wear, allowing you to dance, while floating in mid-air, or prancing on one of the planets or moons.

After getting tired of the restrictions imposed on mainland, we opted for a private estate. I believe we put Club Cutlass floating over our new estate of Buccaneer Bay. But this time it was an Aztec style castle. It remained as such for a few years.

Club Zero Gravity was setup, on Sunweaver Space.  It was a huge sphere and inside the tables floated around. I am not sure if we ever got it on line, as we were always tinkering with it.

The next reincarnation of Club Cutlass was like the ELO album cover, the round doughnut, It was designed and built by Indio Quinnell.  Then after a while, there was a disagreement over the club with Indio as to ownership. We simply replaced it with the current Steampunk Pirate Airship.

As time passes and technology improves and attendees keep growing in numbers. We have opted to upgrade current airship to a new improved, design.  More room, even for Dragons!  So even after 15 years Club Cutlass and even it's sister club Club Zero G, still have it where it counts!

Reader Submitted: Blast From the Past - Fox Haven

by Cyfir (cyfiremmerich Resident)

There are many places in Second Life which inspire a sense of community, but Fox Haven was very special in this regard. Many of the former members are still friends to this day, even if they no longer use Second Life. Now no community is without controversy, and the main community ultimately ended up folding long after it left the Second Life platform, but I will not be focusing on that controversy out of respect for the parties involved. I will instead be focusing on the good times and what made this community special. It was my first true home in Second Life and I was once good friends with the founder. So let’s take a ride to the past and visit what was Fox Haven!

It all started with Slavasesh. He had felt that there wasn’t a safe place for him, his friends, and others to hang out at within Second Life. He ended up renting a parcel. The early members helped to name the community and it became Fox Haven. As the community grew, he eventually used his resources to rent a sim. The sim eventually included a city in the sky level and a forest on the ground level. It’s popularity grew and his one sim quickly grew to two interconnected sims and he began renting out homes on both sims. I first found the sim through a friend named Anthony. I soon ended up renting a home there and quickly became friends with the owner. I started out my Second Life career there, picking up stray prims, doing “sim checks” every day. I slowly worked my way up to other roles such as DJ, club manager, sim manager, and eventually sim co-owner along with Slavsesh and Digimbyte.

I actually never originally wanted to be in any role of power, but I was fond of everyone there and I really believed in the spirit of the community and wanted to contribute in any way that I could. Thus, I took on any role and helped out with anything I could. All the core members of Fox Haven were close and supported each other and helped each other grow. At one point, a user named Acey had a previous partner and friend pass away. The community came together to support him and keep his head in the right place. In his own words: “Fox Haven as a whole provided me with a place in Second Life that felt safe where I didn’t feel afraid to approach people because everyone was friendly and I could almost always count on someone there to cheer me up by making me laugh with jokes or funny gestures; sharing the latest creations or gathering in their houses and watching media together. I didn’t have many real life friends at the time so it definitely contributed to a positive state of mind, knowing that these random avatars in SL weren’t just pretending, they genuinely wanted to hang out and have a good time. I felt welcome.” This was a sentiment that most members, including myself, agreed with and it’s what kept us logging in every day to hang out or do our part to keep the community thriving.

One of the biggest contributors to the sim was a pink deer named Dawny. Even when he left Second Life to focus on his real life business, he would return to donate L to keep the sim going. One of the first clubs on the sim was named after him and called Up ‘til Dawny’s. Even with Dawny not around, the name stayed for much of the sim’s life. At one point I had messaged Dawny on FurAffinity and he was surprised that the name was still in use years later. The club featured many talented DJs, a couple of which were DJs and producers in real life. I learned how to DJ and make flawless transitions between songs from one of them. The club was mainly a great place to chill and have a good time with friends. It eventually got a new name (Future Haze) and a beautiful new sci-fi minimalist building with a fish tank glass floor created out of smart objects by Digimbyte.

As time went on, it got harder to keep two sims going and Slavasesh eventually moved to just one sim. I was there at his real life house when he purchased and originally set up the new sim. However, Second Life was changing, and smaller tight-knit communities were suffering. On top of this, real life was pulling Slavasesh away and it got to a point where it wasn’t worth keeping a full sim going for a hangout spot. Despite this, Slavasesh kept the sim going as long as he could, because he didn’t want his friends to no longer have a home on Second Life. Despite his commendable efforts, it got to a point where he just couldn’t keep things going, and many logged in one day to find the sim gone. However, the community lived on in Discord, and many of the core members are still friends to this day and keep the core values alive.

Reader Submitted: The SL DJ And Host Hall Of Fame

By Alysabelle Resident

Well its been a long time since I wrote an article. This one in particular I have been keenly interested in, the place is called the SL DJ and Host Hall of Fame. Perhaps this article will be an eye opener for those, who like me, who didn't even know that the SL DJ and Host Hall Of Fame existed or unless assuming you are a Deejay or a Host in Second Life then perhaps you have heard about it. But despite all this I still wanted to know all about it and inform everyone who never known what the SL DJ and Host Hall Of fame is all about . I realize quickly that Deejays and Host have a place of their own in recognition of their hard work and in entertaining us with their music and banter. It was a true eye opener for me as always I hope that I have done justice in writing this article , this is my very first Second Life venue I have written about.

I was fascinated about SL DJ and Host Hall of Fame and knowing myself I had to pursue my curiosity as always . I want to start by saying I have attended several events mostly inductee's and a few memorial services and even a fund raiser and it was successful . It's an interesting story how the SL DJ and Host Hall Of Fame came to be. First the owners are DJ Chris (chris62.greybeard) and DJ 3D (dia.dufaux) prior to the SL DJ and Host Hall Of Fame, DJ 3 D has deejay for six years in SL. DJ 3D owned and managed a place called the SL Rock and Roll Memorial Museum for six years she owned and managed three clubs herself and as well as managed other club owners venues . She has trained staff and place them into clubs. DJ Chris has been a DJ for 7 years and owned at one time three clubs in Second Life as well. He trained 22 deejay's and 18 hosts for one club alone called the Fantasy Rock which at the time it was number one in Second Life for a year. He also owned a club called Galaxy Garden and both DJ Chis and DJ Dia co -owned a placed call CJ's Rock Club. They also have extensive real life back round in the music industry of one sort or another.

Without a doubt its obvious DJ Chris and DJ Dia complement each other and they had a vision to open a venue called the SL DJ and Host Hall Of Fame and soon there after their vision was realized when it open up on March 14th 2014 . Of course they didn't realize how popular it would eventually become, it's also recognized by Linden Lab . You can tell when you visit the SL DJ and Host Hall Of Fame that it is a true labor of love. They had this intense desire for the deejay's and hosts/hostesses in Second Life to be recognized not for any popularity contest at all, but for them to be recognize for the hard work involved in being a Deejay or a Host and to be honored by their peers. The SL DJ and Host Hall Of Fame consist of numerous highly experiences judges and they themselves go out into different venues and listen to the Deejay's or Host or both and if there is any type of recommendation or improvement they will provide it, for SL DJ and Host Hall Of Fame their desire for Deejay's and Host to become one of the best in Second Life.

The SL DJ and Host Hall Of Fame is a non-profit organization and like any other non -profit organization they do ask for any and all donations to continue to flourish as well as provide support for the tier. They encourage anyone who would like to hire a Deejay or Host for any event to either contact DJ Chris (chris62.greybeard)or DJ 3D (dia.dufaux) and would be happy to provide one of the best inductee's in Second Life. They also happily encourage anyone who would like to plan an event at The SL DJ and Host Hall Of Fame to contact them. From time to time they hold fund raiser for the Hall, Recently theyhad an R and B Halloween music fest and it was quite the successful .

Once you teleport to The SL DJ Hall Of Fame you will be facing the entrance door to the right there is a teleporter to the many stores that are on the right and left side of the Hall . The DJ and Host Hall Of Fame itself is quite impressive the details are immaculate . If you cam up you will notice two animated amplifiers and a mixer board. The SL DJ and Host Hall of Fame was build by none other by Che Bonpuli (cheonjiwang) what an impressive building it is ! When you turn around prior to walking in the Hall there is a vintage record player, speakers, turn table in large form, deejay's can as well hold an event there it was created by Squeeeeeaky. Squeeeeeaky also created some of the frames inside the The SL DJ and Host Hall Of Fame quite creatively, before him it was DJ SteveRay Vaughn created and design their plaques. They have a Mascot and his name is Crebb Seetan is a psychedelic dragon . He has been with the DJ and Host Hall of Fame since their opening and prior he was with the owners for the Rock n Roll Museum. For applying to be inducted in the SL DJ and Host Hall Of Fame any Deejay or Host in Second Life or a friend of theirs can apply to become an inductee in the SL DJ and Host Hall of Fame. Upon entering in the Hall you will notice both application forms are on either side of the desk at the bottom and on the left side application for Deejay's on the right side application for host. Once inducted the inductee's receive a plaque and a trophy, if they come to the induction itself.

Continuing as you look into the Hall on the right and left you will notice Deejay inductions and host induction plaques. Behind the desk there is the stage and to the left of the stage you will notice a Headset tip jar for the venue to help with the tier, you will notice a podium as well for the Master of Ceremony and the chairs up front on the stage facing the audience is for the Deejay's or Host who will be Inducted in the SL DJ and Host Hall Of Fame. There are also numerous chairs for guest and family to attend . For the Host inductions it usually takes place the third Sunday of each month. The DJ induction usually takes place the last Sunday of each month the festivities start at 5 pm slt and the ceremony starts at 6 pm SL time. Both ceremonies last approx: and hour give or take. They also have Memorial service upon request for Deejay's and Host but please inquire with either DJ Chris (chris62.greybeard)or DJ 3D (dia.dufaux) for time and date to be discussed . The Inductions and the Memorial are done both in voice and in text. The voice for the Hall Of Fame is real life professional voice actor DJ James Eastman. And the dress code is always formal.

On the second floor is set aside for the future Deejay induction plaques and as well the second floor overlooks the stage. On the third floor the entire promenade there are more Deejay plaques that have been inducted. On the third floor to the left you will discover the Marie Bravitz host wing which houses all the plaques of the Hosts inducted in the SL Dj& Host Hall of Fame. And to the right the DJ Jay Jones Honorary DJ Wing that house the plaques of honorary deejays. This wing honors those Deejay's with real life and or Second Life that have years of experience. .

The SL DJ Hall Of Fame consist of over 272 DJ inductions and 40 Host inductions and growing. Here are the colors of the plaque and there meanings...The gold frames are only for the Deejay's, the silver frames are for the Host. The silver and gold frames are both a combination of both a Deejay and a Host . If the plaques at the bottom are red on either gold or silver frames or both these deejays or host have passed away.

The next induction would normally take place at the end of November but due to Thanksgiving it has been scheduled for December 2nd 2018.

I would encourage anyone to visit the DJ and Host Hall Of Fame it is quite impressive it's also open to the public . In closing, I found both DJ Chris (chris62.greybeard) and DJ 3D (dia.dufaux) very informative and a pleasure to have met them .

Thank you .

Reader Submission: Second Life Museum of Nuclear War

By Fritter Enzyme

Clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right.  Real life has been an active place lately in the area of nuclear threats.  Some truly scary people have their fingers on the button.  I am not feeling the love.

SL is a place of fun and fantasy.  Beauty abounds, find friends, role play, dance and get away from the realities of life.  But just like real life, it is all in here.  Educational opportunities, religion and even hate groups.  Museums of all kind.  Some to celebrate life and art, some to commemorate disasters, past or future.  This one covers both.  What damage we have done, both in usage and in testing of thermal nuclear weapons.  What damage we can do.  What we hope will never be.  Who has them, and who they can reach?

When you see a small red pyramid, click on it for a Wiki link, giving you the design, history, capacity and more for the things around you.  There are so many places to TP to, control rooms, missile silos, defense systems, drones, even Sputnik makes an appearance.  Tour a nuclear reactor.  See the rods cooling.  Click and get the information.  Learn about the Manhattan Project.  The Cuban Missile Crisis.   And North Korea.

The spot I leave for last is very important.  Real drawing made by survivor children.  This is real.  They tell quite a story, if one takes the time to listen.  Please save it for last.  But please do go.
The gallery of children’s drawings after Japan was bombed is particularly disturbing to view.  Their depictions are heart breaking, to say the least.  Skin melting off of people, faces in flames, skeletons laying in the streets.  These are the real witnesses to horrors unimaginable to us, and children to boot.  And, maybe, never got to see adulthood.  Their horrific artwork is the epitome of the whole museum.

This site might not be cheery and cute, but touch the truth that is there.  We have done some damage.  The next round is the last.

Editor's Note: While the atomic bombing of the Japanese Empire was controversial from the start, in these politically-charged times, it is possibly more than ever. Critics charge the bombings never should have been carried out. Others respond that the alternative was to continue the conventional bombing of Japanese cities, which would have resulted in about as many or more dead. And then there was the planned invasion of Japan. Given the fierce resistance at Iwo Jima and Okinawa, it was estimated that the invasion would have cost about a million American dead and wounded, and four million Japanese.

Reader Submitted: The Little Cinema At Road 12

By Ciska Riverstone

Those of you, who took Road 12 on mainland recently might have had a glance at that small simple wooden build surrounded by a lot of open space with the magic Cinema Sign up, glowing just a little.  It does not try to be glamorous and plain out loud by appearance. Instead it comes across as a practical and functional build, which friends of you could have put together on some weekends work at some open space, to have a place to come together and follow their passion or just hang out.

And this is exactly what the little roadside cinema does. Every Friday at 1 PM it becomes a cozy home for silent movies lovers.  Walk in, grab some popcorn, lean back in one of the classic cinema seats, enjoy the curtains opening to show the screen and wait for Abinoams magical words: "Did everyone start their Media? - yes? Okay, I sync the film."  - Yes that's Second Life for you!

I out myself as someone, who always liked silent movies ever since I was a kid. I adore the imagination, which had to go into expressing and composing the pictures, which made up most of the storytelling in those days and allowed by style to cut the words down to a small amount. For me silent movies act as an reminder, that you can tell stories without words in any world at any time, no matter how simple the means are.

Silent movies are driven by the stories they want to tell in an unique way. Their heroes are much less black and white, then their nowadays' blockbuster colored pendants, which makes them, despite their overacted emotions at times, more real and more serving to the whole story they are there to tell. They aim more towards inspiring your own imagination then to just digest the ready-made fast-food picture the blockbusters serve us today.

Coming together in this virtual space to experience those movies has a practical aspect too: most of us can read a little English at least, and for a silent movie not much else is needed. That makes it a great experience for folks from different part of the world and is a practical way to live the fact that art does exist without cultural boundaries.

For quite some time even before this cinema was built at the space it stands now. Abinoam, the owner of the Little Cinema, proved his talent in picking a wide range of silent movies from all over the world and all kinds of genres: From the well knows classic Comedies like Harold Lloyds Savety Last,  over The Abyss by Urban Gad, a whole collection of German silent movies to last weeks fun suspense movie "The Cat and the Canary" by Paul Leni, everyone watching had a chance to discover new old gems as well as enjoying already known ones. The coming weekends with be deducated to the dark sided movies fitting the Halloween season.

Be sure to join next Friday 1 pm slt @
